Chemicals and related industries and health

Head offices, legal and commercial departments, and commercial subsidiaries of foreign groups and small businesses in the chemicals and related sectors are flourishing in the Brussels-Capital Region.

• Giving priority to high added value sectors and research, the chemicals sector employs some 10,000.
• One third of these 10,000 are on the paramedical side, for the drugs and veterinary products sector.
• More than 26 % of exports from Brussels relate to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, which are the crux of the Brussels economy.

Three university medical faculties and many hospitals explain the high concentration of activities in the health area. These include almost every speciality. The most important are:

• biology and genetics;
• the fight against cancer;
• treatment of diabetes;
• pharmaceutical research;
• public health;
• medical imaging.
